Meta’s latest move in the effort to reinvent Second Life, or roll out the metaverse, involves building better VR chips and it’s trusting Qualcomm with the job.Īt the IFA conference in Berlin this week, Meta and Qualcomm penned a multi-year partnership to co-develop custom silicon for next-gen VR platforms.
There is no word on pricing yet, but we do know from Xiaomi themselves that the Redmi A1 is the first from the all-new Made In India Redmi smartphone series and will be getting a global launch. Unfortunately, it showcases its front rather than the much more interesting leather-style back side. Last but not least, we also have a live photo of the device.
Other known features include Bluetooth 5.0 and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi n, as well as Android 12. The camera setup includes an 8MP, f/2.0 main snapper with an f/2.2 supplementary camera, likely a depth sensor.
All of that, plus the 5,000 mAh battery with 10W charging, dual SIM and microSD card slots, 3.5mm jack and FM radio, will be packed inside a 164.9mm x 76.75mm x 9.09mm, 192g body. The Redmi A1 is said to pack a 6.52-inch, 1600 x 720 pixel, 20:9, HD+ display with a MediaTek Helio A22 chipset, coupled with LPDDR4X RAM and eMMC 5.1 storage.
As for the rest of the specs, we have to turn to one of the leaks. The teaser page also mentions a 5,000 mAh battery. First things first, though – Xiaomi just dropped an official teaser for the device, alongside some high-quality renders that showcase a couple of nice, soft pastel colors for the handset and a leather texture style finish for its back. The Redmi A1, not to be mistaken with the quite old Xiaomi Mi A1 (Mi 5x), was just featured in a couple of extensive leaks. Xiaomi appears to have a new budget Redmi phone on the way. Tencent, which has benefited from a surge in paying gamers, said last week its online games revenue rose 29% to 39.1 billion yuan in the fourth quarter.
Tencent did not immediately reply to a Reuters request for comment. The sources declined to be identified because the information is not public. Aurora Studios Group, boosted by its Moonlight Blade Mobile title, contributed 3%, the people said. Of Tencent’s remaining gaming revenue last year, its Lightspeed and Quantum studio, the developer of PUBG Mobile, another top-grossing game, contributed 29%, the people said, while 26% was proceeds from publishing for other developers.
Timi’s proceeds accounted for 40% of the game revenue, said the two people. Last week, Tencent reported 156.1 billion yuan ($23.79 billion) in overall online game revenues for 2020 but did not break down revenue for individual studios, which are run independently and compete with each other. Such games feature long sessions and in-depth storytelling or battles, with some including multiplayer online role-playing or online battle arenas. Many major studios are turning to Tencent for support to convert their “hardcore” desktop or console games to mobile. Tencent aims eventually to derive half its game revenue from overseas, from 23 percent in the fourth quarter of 2019, the most recently available figure. Tencent is building studios overseas, including one for Timi and one for Lightspeed and Quantum, both in Los Angeles, with the goal of creating content with original intellectual property that has global appeal.
In a recruitment notice last month, a Timi engineer wrote that the company aims to create a new AAA game that resembles the virtual community from the movie Ready Player One, and will “compete head-to-head against big powers from Japan, Korea, Europe and US.”
It also provides a hefty basis for its ambitions to move beyond mobile games and compete directly with global heavyweights developing expensive “AAA” titles on platforms such as desktop computers, Sony’s PlayStation, Nintendo’s Switch and Microsoft’s Xbox. The $10 billion would make Timi the world’s largest developer, the sources say, which many industry watchers had suspected to be the case. NEW DELHI: Chinese tech giant Tencent‘s Timi Studios, maker of popular video games Honor of Kings and Call of Duty Mobile, generated revenue of $10 billion last year, two people with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.
